What are the different categories to Shopping.com's product catalogue?
Shopping.com's product catalogue is structured as follows:
- Productized category (e.g. Digital Cameras) is a category where Shopping.com has identified unique products, such as a specific digital camera with a unique model number. A single product has multiple offers from different merchants. A product will have specifications and ratings tied to it.
- Unstructured category (e.g. Flowers or Jewelry) is typically a soft goods category where there is no UPC or manufacturer part number (MPN) to describe a specific product, as these items are typically unique to a single merchant. In such categories we allow users to navigate by attributes, such as stone type, e.g. diamonds.
- Soft-structured category (e.g. Shoes or Fragrances) is a category where there is no universal code or manufacturer part number (MPN) to describe a specific product, but there is actually such a product from the same manufacturer that is being sold by different retailers. Shopping.com is using its proprietary technologies to identify and cluster different store offers under the same product.
- Productized category will have an additional layer of structure to help qualify users, improve user experience, and ultimately improve conversion to sale for our ecosystem. Productized categories also tend to have higher merchant CPCs. I think it's important that we test all types of categories to get as much useful data from this test as possible.
