Important things to know about Shopping.com's search engine

Matching and sorting logic:

When a user queries Shopping.com, we use a proprietary search algorithm to find relevant product and offer matches from our database. The matching logic that we use will determine the results we match. A few important things to note about our search:

  • After normalization, keyword queries will match only items with all terms included.
  • We determine match order based on the text descriptions supplied by merchants, by our own internal catalog data, and by popularity data based on previous user activity.
  • If the search engine thinks there is ambiguity about which category has the best results, it will use a result format that shows a few items from several categories. If it estimates that the best results are primarily in one category, it will restrict the search to that category only, but provide links towards the top of the page to see other categories with matches.

Modifications to the search term:

  • When making search term queries to Shopping.com through the API, partners should try to leave the original query as-is, rather than stripping punctuation, changing case, changing word order, etc.
  • In general, users should be able to run queries on singular and plural noun forms, with similar results.
  • Some queries may result in a spelling-change suggestion.  If the query has no results, we will explain that and show results from the modified query.  If the query does have results, we will show them, but suggest the modification as well.
  • When queries have no result, we may suggest ways of removing a small number of words that should generate results.
